A sketched idea, no matter how rough, becomes an object that I can react to. Every design choice we make has an impact, however small, on the world. The length of a bar becomes a stand-in for a quantity, the slope of a line represents a rate of change, and the colour of a region on a map can signify a specific category or intensity. Its forms may evolve from printed tables to sophisticated software, but its core function—to provide a single, unambiguous point of truth between two different ways of seeing the world—remains constant. Learning about concepts like cognitive load (the amount of mental effort required to use a product), Hick's Law (the more choices you give someone, the longer it takes them to decide), and the Gestalt principles of visual perception (how our brains instinctively group elements together) has given me a scientific basis for my design decisions.
