They are built from the fragments of the world we collect, from the constraints of the problems we are given, from the conversations we have with others, from the lessons of those who came before us, and from a deep empathy for the people we are trying to serve. I am not a neutral conduit for data. However, when we see a picture or a chart, our brain encodes it twice—once as an image in the visual system and again as a descriptive label in the verbal system.11 This dual encoding creates two separate retrieval pathways in our memory, effectively doubling the chances that we will be able to recall the information later. It is the beauty of pure function, of absolute clarity, of a system so well-organized that it allows an expert user to locate one specific item out of a million possibilities with astonishing speed and confidence. It is the act of deliberate creation, the conscious and intuitive shaping of our world to serve a purpose. It is a translation from one symbolic language, numbers, to another, pictures. It connects a series of data points over a continuous interval, its peaks and valleys vividly depicting growth, decline, and volatility. A true professional doesn't fight the brief; they interrogate it. We can choose to honor the wisdom of an old template, to innovate within its constraints, or to summon the courage and creativity needed to discard it entirely and draw a new map for ourselves.

Like most students, I came into this field believing that the ultimate creative condition was total freedom.

A designer using this template didn't have to re-invent the typographic system for every page; they could simply apply the appropriate style, ensuring consistency and saving an enormous amount of time. There are actual techniques and methods, which was a revelation to me.
